We need to take simple steps to improve Highway 93 and U.S. 6 because we have an outdated, unsafe and inadequate road connecting Colorado's 21st century research institutions and New Energy Economy.
Highway 93 has twice the rate of fatalities as other comparable roads in the state. It has very high rates of death and injuries from wildlife collisions. It is closed frequently because of high winds and snow. It is congested in some locations during rush hours. However, it can be fixed at a lower cost to the public than proposed toll road concepts.
The City of Golden, City of Boulder, Boulder County and the town of Superior have worked collaboratively to develop a plan for improving the Highway 93 and 6th Avenue corridors by phasing improvements in order to best make cost-efficient incremental changes.
The plan includes four key elements:
* Improve safety and congestion by adding shoulders, guardrails, acceleration and deceleration lanes, and similar improvements at specifically targeted points
* Complete the Front Range Trail, providing a safe, convenient bicycle connection between Boulder and Golden
* Enhance bus service between Boulder and Golden
* Rebuild key intersections in Golden to make them safer for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians while connecting western neighborhoods with the main part of the city
Improvements made in the plan can make Highway 93 able to safely accommodate expected traffic for the foreseeable future.
